The cast of Chrono Cross is impressive. With over 40 characters
to recruit and only a fighting party of 3, you might wonder
which characters are worth using and which are a liability.
Below, we list each character, what their Innate Color is,
and basically what they're good and bad at. Use your better
discretion on how you use them.
Serge
Innate Color: White
Being the main character, Serge really isn't optional the
first time through. Luckily for the player, Serge is great
with both physical and magical attacks. He's deadly against
black innate enemies.
Kid
Innate Color: Red
The real benefit in using Kid is that she's the first person
you get who can steal from enemies. Her physical attacks aren't
really strong, except against blue innate creatures. Her magic
is decent. You'll probably use her throughout most of the
beginning of the game just for her ability to steal.
Poshul
Innate Color: Yellow
Poshul has fairly decent physical attacks but is
ridiculously weak when it comes to magic use. The only real
benefit to having Poshul is that she's the first person you
can recruit and she helps in the first area and the first
boss fight with Solt, Peppor and Karsh.
Leena
Innate Color: Blue
Leena has a less than great physical attack, but it decent
in defense and pretty good with magic. Her claim to fame is
that she's the ONLY blue innate you'll have for a long while(especially
if you choose Guile in Termina), which means if you want to
use that FrogPrince Summon that you got as a gift from the
Water Dragon, you'll have to keep her in your party whether
you like it or not.
Mojo
Innate Color: Black
If Mojo wasn't so cool looking, he'll be utterly useless.
His tech skills are decent, but everything else is just abysmal.
If it wasn't for the usefulness of his Level 3 Tech at the
beginning of the game, he wouldn't even be worth a mention.
Guile
Innate Color: Black
Guile is one of the three men you can recruit in Termina to
break into Viper Manor. Guile has decent physical attacks
but strong magical attacks. His tech skills are exceptional
damaging in themselves. He's also the first character you
can recruit whose Fierce attack strikes all enemies at once.
The major drawback to him is the total lack of Element slots.
Nikki
Innate Color: Blue
Nikki is one of the three men you can recruit in Termina to
break into Viper Manor. Nikki is an all-around balanced character.
With decent physical and magical attacks, he won't be a detriment
to your party.
Pierre
Innate Color: Blue
Pierre is one of the three men you can recruit in Termina
to break into Viper Manor. Pierre totally lacks until you
get all three pieces of his Hero equipment. When you get those,
he actually becomes fairly decent.
Greco
Innate Color: Red
As with most Red innates, Greco is poor when it comes to Elements.
He is pretty good with his attack, especially if you equip
him with something to raise his attack percentage. He's strongest
when fighting Blue innates.
Luccia
Innate Color: Black
Luccia's biggest weakness is that her physical attacks are
extremely lacking. She has decent magic and a good amount
of Elemental slots. If you can get enough of her attacks to
hit to build up Elemental power, she can be dangerous against
most foes, especially White Innates.
NeoFio
Innate Color: Green
NeoFio is in a word... Weak. Unless your fighting a pack of
small Yellow Innates (and I do mean small...), don't waste
your time. NeoFio is a character for collection buffs.
Razzly
Innate Color: Green
Razzly is basically the green version of Riddel. No physical
defense but lots of magical offense. Her triple tech skill
with Serge and Leena gives her an added bonus.
Korcha
Innate Color: Blue
Korcha is decent as an all-around character. If you don't
have Pierre or Nikki by the time you get him, he's a nice
change of pace from Leena as a Blue Innate in your team.
Pip
Innate Color: White
Pip is a testament to using a character religiously. The more
you use him, the better he gets. His innate color changes
to correspond with the elements he uses. And his Level 7 tech
comes about in a "third stage of evolution".
Doc
Innate Color: White
With Serge already required in your party, I can hardly justify
putting Doc in. He's weak physically and his tech skills are
of no match to Serge's. To be honest, there are better white
innate characters to have, like Steena and Riddel.
Macha
Innate Color: Red
Macha is weak physically, but decent with magic. To be honest,
there are better red innate characters to use than her. Since
you get her and Glenn at the same time, you might find it
hard to put her in your party at all.
Steena
Innate Color: White
The real drawback to Steena is that you get her pretty late
in the game. She's a great fighter with a good handle on magic.
Her Tech Skills look cool and can do some real damage to Black
Innates.
Glenn
Innate Color: Green
Glenn is an excellent fighter who has decent magic abilities.
When you equip him with both Einlanzers, he becomes extremely
damaging in physical combat. His double tech with Serge is
exceptionally damaging, especially late in the game.
Lynx
Innate Color: Black
Consider Lynx to be the black version of Serge. His strong
attacks and magic use are augmented by his highly damaging
tech skills. Lynx can put a serious hurt on any white innate
enemy.
Sprigg
Innate Color: Green
Sprigg can be a liability. She's weak physically and has almost
no elemental slots. If it wasn't for her ability to Dopplegang
enemies she's finished off, she'd be totally useless. Her
Dopplegang ability is essential in gaining Janice. In battle,
though, it's almost useless. By the time you get her elemental
level up enough to change into something else, most battles
will be over.
Harle
Innate Color: Black
Harle can be a nice addition to your party, but the main drawback
is that she can be a liability against white innates. Her
Tech Skills are effective and useful and her ability with
magic is helpful at the time you get her.
Radius
Innate Color: Green
While there are better physical Green Innates that you can
get, Radius' magical ability, while not overwhelming, lend
a helpful hand against creatures weak to magic. Equip him
with a Yellow Plate to shake off that nasty weakness to yellow.
Funguy
Innate Color: Yellow
Funguy (pun intended) can be a fun guy. That is, if you don't
want a lot of magic from him. He's a great physical attacker
with damaging tech skills.
Norris
Innate Color: Yellow
Norris is to yellow as Starky is to white (minus the cool-looking
Tech Skills). If your looking to have someone to aid in wiping
out large parties of Green Innates, then consider bringing
him along.
Starky
Innate Color: White
He has fairly damaging attacks and cool-looking Tech Skills
that are harmful to most, especially Black Innates. Where
he suffers if defense. If you can load him up with some excellent
armor, he's decent to have around.
Janice
Innate Color: Red
Except for decent HPs, she's really just an average character.
The only good thing about her is that you can don't have to
forge her Prism-class weapon. You can find it in Chronopolis.
Of course, if you're not going to use her, then just disassemble
it to make something better.
Sneff
Innate Color: Yellow
Sneff is in a word... OK. His stats won't amaze you, except
that he's fairly decent with magic and tech skills. His double
tech with Guile is pretty damaging, though. That might be
the one reason you'll want to use him.
Irenes
Innate Color: Blue
There are better Blue Innates to have in your party - MANY
better... With both Low HPs and Hit Percentage, Irenes is
a huge liability.
Viper
Innate Color: Yellow
Viper is a strong fighter that's noticeably weak with magic.
Once you give him the Viper's Venom, an anchor that parades
around as his weapon, he'll do a gross amount of damage. He
lack of decent magic is the only real liability with him.
Riddel
Innate Color: White
With very low HPs, physical attack and defense, you might
think Riddel is a total waste. Her saving grace is her high
magic attack and her huge number of element slots. Just give
her Prism mail and a lot of defensive items.
Karsh
Innate Color: Green
Much like Glenn, Karsh is an excellent green innate fighter.
He's not strong with magic, but his ability won't be a total
detriment. When equipped with a Stone Axe or Rainbow Axe,
he can deal out some real damage with his attacks and Tech
Skills.
Zoah
Innate Color: Yellow
Zoah is a testament to his character design: brawny, strong
and absolutely NO magic ability. He has a great Double Tech
with Karsh that you should try out.
Marcy
Innate Color: Blue
Marcy's strong against Red Innates, but may not provide the
killing whallop you need for other colors. She can do decent
physical damage and can be useful as a healer.
Zappa
Innate Color: Red
Zappa is powerful, but really lacks when it comes to magic.
He's essential to forging Prism weapons later in the game,
but really isn't much help in combat, unless you want to muscle
your way through.
Orcha
Innate Color: Red
Rather ordinary, to say of the least. His Tech Skills are
fairly damaging.
Fargo
Innate Color: Blue
Fargo is beneficial to your team in that he can steal. You
will probably use him in every fight against the six dragons
to steal from them. On top of that, he does some good physical
damage and handles his magic competently.
Miki
Innate Color: Red
The spicy dancer is pretty good.. to look at. In all fairness,
she is fairly decent with magic.
Draggy
Innate Color: Red
Don't be afraid to use this cute little dragon. He has a lot
of HP and can cause some real damage. Extremely effective
against Blue Innates.
Turnip
Innate Color: Green
Except for carrying a sword, Turnip's about useless. His cuteness
factor, though, may be the only reason to pick him up.
Skelly
Innate Color: Black
Skelly is weak. He lacks in most areas. Consider him nothing
more than a character to add to your roster.
Mel
Innate Color: Yellow
The only real attractive thing about Mel is her ability to
steal. There are better Yellow Innates when it comes to damage
and defense.
Leah
Innate Color: Yellow
Surprisingly, this little girl packs a whallop. She may be
susceptible to green attacks, but her own physical ability
can be helpful.
Van
Innate Color: Green
Decent magic user with a good number of slots. His level 5
Tech acts as a random "Color" Field, making the field effect
all one color, much earlier in the game then you would actually
get one of them.
Grobyc
Innate Color: Black
Grobyc is an essential Black Innate Fighter. When equipped
with a White Plate, he can be a great asset. His magic skills
aren't overwhelming and his physical defense isn't the best,
but he can do some real damage nonetheless. His Tech Skills
can pack a punch.
Orhla
Innate Color: Blue
Orhla is a great fighter. Her tech skills cause a good bit
of damage. She may not have the best magical skill, but she
does well. It's a shame you get her so late in the game.
