Mogwai is an unusual beast. Musically kin to Fugazi,
they can come out in a whisper and grow into a steady pulse
of rhythm. Having very little in the way of lyrics, most listeners
might find themselves confused by the steady, lulling harmonies.
The album itself rolls on flowing from one song to the other,
slowly growing in intensity until it raises to a fevered pitch
in the next to last song, Christmas Steps. For those
who need to have a structured musical environment, this album
may not be for you. If you're fond of soundscape bands like
Lull and Main, you should find this along the
same lines, just with guitars and a regular beat.
If you want to have something just to listen to as one solid
piece of work, then grab up Come On Die Young.
