Buzzov*en trudges through this album, sounding like
many of the Louisiana Sludge Metal (i.e., Eyehategod,
Crowbar, and Exhorder). Adding equal parts dementia
and intensity, this album is a great starting point for this
band. Buzzov*en has a menace to them that competes,
and even surpasses, some more popular bands like Marilyn
Manson and Slipknot.
The main problem with Sore is that there seems to
be all this intensity, followed up by a dragging-on of many
songs. Tracks that should have been five minutes long are
twice that length, and unnecessarily so. Tracks like Unwilling
to Explain and Hollow show that they can
make successful short tracks. This is not to say that some
of the longer tracks are not also good. The last track, This
is Not, is a deep and haunting soundfest.
Even with the fuzzy guitars and deep bass, most people will
probably be turned off by the style and execution of this
album. The raspy vocals and near indecipherable lyrics (much
like Eyehategod) will most certainly hinder most listeners.
If you're into this style of music, be our guest and pick
this one up. It is a good album, but just not for people who
aren't into the genre.
