Based on the first novel of a trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien,
The Fellowship of the Rings begins as the hobbit Frodo
Baggins (Wood) is given a ring by his uncle Bilbo (Holm),
who takes off after his birthday party. When the wizard Gandalf
(McKellen) recognizes that Frodo has the One Ring, an all-powerful
ring that will let the one-defeated Sauron rule the world,
he takes the hobbit, and a few tagalong friends to have the
ring destroyed in the volcanic fires that created it. Along
the way, they gather a fellowship of allies which helps them
survive the trip. For the detailed information on what
hobbits or anything in Tolkien's Middle Earth is, just read
the books or ask someone who knows. It would take too long
to explain in this review.
The story itself is littered with moments that will make
you laugh just as a break from one amazing action sequence
after the other. In fact, there is so much action that you
might find it hard to take your eyes off the screen for fear
of missing anything good. After the first thirty minutes of
setup, which slowly builds the basis for the rest of the movie,
the action comes fast and furious. While not perfect with
the original books, the script and film in general do manage
to capture the Tolkien feel to it. Just don't expect your
vision of Middle Earth to be perfectly imagined here and your
be pleased.
I can state no single person that stands out in this film,
mainly because everyone who makes an appearance does such
an excellent job that the caliber of the cast is not lessened
by any weak performance. Visually, the environments are amazingly
sculpted and the special effects are stellar. Monsters are
exceptionally realized, especially the fiery Balrog who makes
a devastating appearance.
The only thing that should keep you from seeing this film
is an absolute distaste for fantasy. Everyone else will enjoy
this movie and want to go back for more. To be honest, this
is easily the best fantasy movie I have ever seen.
