While McFarlane Toys are well known for their high level
of detail and style, they're also well known for their focus
on more mature toys, like the graphic Tortured
Souls series and the forthcoming H.R.
Giger figures. So, it was only a matter of time before
they decided to take on the classics of horror, like Dracula
and Frankenstein.
What can be said about the quality of the figures that hasn't
been said before? McFarlane has set the standard for detail
in collectible figures and this set is no different. The figures
have a good degree of articulation (ranging from 11 on the
Frankenstein to 21 on the Mummy) and come with various assorted
items.
Where the set seems to meet a sticky point is in the actual
design of the characters. Rather than going with a more traditional
view of the classic monsters, the set designers have created
over-the-top designs more in line with McFarlane's previous
monster and Spawn lines. Traditionalists will most likely
take one look at the series and put them back on the shelves
as they have taken grand liberties with the design. While
I know they couldn't use the exact look from the movies, I
was hoping for a more "realistic" rendering of some of the
monsters. Both Dracula and Frankenstein look to fantastical.
But, on the other hand, the Sea Creature and Mummy both look
pretty good.
Whether or not you want to purchase this series will most
likely depend on your take of their redesign of the classic
creatures. Traditionalists may pass these up, while collectors
who enjoy a more fantastic view will want the whole set. I
can't deny McFarlane's level of quality, even though I may
take issue with their design choices.
