Nintendo had recently been aluding to the fact that they were developing a new console (aside from the follow-up to the Gamecube and GBA). As reported in a variety of sources (Seattlepi, Gamespot, 1up.com) this new hardware is a portable game device and has been codenamed the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DS will feature a dual-screen display and will be a totally separate format from their GameBoy series of handhelds.
While there were no prototypes or pictures available at the announcement, Nintendo did announce that the new platform would be available worldwide by the end of 2004 and would be playable at this year's E3. Also, expect it to be backlit.
Commenting on the new piece of hardware, Nintendo had the following to say:
"There seems to be an insatiable appetite for portable play." [Perrin Kaplan, VP of Marketing, Nintendo of America]
"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience" [Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo Co.]
